and as for missy franklin

“Franklin was the darling of the American swim team in London, where she won four gold medals — in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and two relays, the 4×200 freestyle and the medley relay, on which she swam the backstroke.”

“In Rio, she had what she describes as “the hardest week of my life, by far.”

“I’m shattered,” she said.

Franklin did not qualify for the finals in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke. She was cut from the 4×200 freestyle relay before the finals.”

“I wish I had an excuse, but I don’t, and I’m not going to make up one,” Franklin said, smiling between sobs Thursday night. “The truth is I worked as hard as I possibly could. I did everything I could think of doing, and for some reason I fell more short than I ever have before. I wish so much that there’s an explanation for that.”

“So what happened? To those in the sport, this performance didn’t sneak up. Franklin failed to make the U.S. team in the 100 back, one of her gold medal events in London. She had to scrap her way in by finishing in the top two in the 200 back at trials, which she did with a swim of 2:07.89 seconds. Still, that not only wasn’t within a body length of her own world record (2:04.06), but ranked her as just the 10th-best performer this year in an event she once owned.”

“I’m just trusting that God has a plan and a purpose and he’s going to make something beautiful out of this,” she said, “even though I really wish I could ask him what that’s going to be right now.”

“I’m going to be the best cheerleader for USA for the rest of the meet,” Franklin said. “My teammates are amazing and I’m so happy for them.”
